great moogly googly

Hey now! It looks like the mothership has landed here in Austin, TX. There was a time not too long ago that I was getting pings from recruiters at Google about once every month or two, and I always told them that I’d love to check it out, but I’m not moving back to the Bay Area for any job. Well, now I wouldn’t have to. I’m filled with anticipation and trepidation - it looks like it’s going to be an “R&D Office”, whatever that means for them, but I reckon it would inevitably be super sweet. However, it would still be an office, and I’ve grown accustomed to slinging my ActionScript and Flex-fu for a couple of cozy clients in my bathrobe from the home office in 78704. But, Google! I’ll still drop them a line - sounds like they’re primarily looking for C++ and Java folks right now, which I can totally do, but I’m really rusty on at the moment - and see what they say. I’m also worried about a quote from a recent interview with Google CEO Eric Schmidt, regarding the “20% time” that engineers take to work on side projects:
How do people actually do 20 percent time? How do people actually figure out a way to actually get 20 percent of their time for that without working on weekends?
They work on weekends.
Um. Well, then. Anyway, we’ll see how that goes.
